Arenal Volcano

The last catastrophic eruption of the Arenal Volcano was in 1968 when it erupted and sent a pyro clastic flow to the west. A number of people were killed and the old town near Lake Arenal was destroyed.  The volcano is active and spurts gases, but the last lava flows were several years ago.

Like Mt. Rainier, this volcano seems to make its own weather. Some views of the volcano:
